Case Study:
FanDuel’s Anti-Money Laundering Series
A scene from FanDuel’s interactive Anti-Money Laundering training showing characters at a retail location.
Project Summary and Strategy
FanDuel, the United States’ leader in online sports gaming, partnered with award-winning Labyrinth Training to create an interactive, animated compliance experience to educate their staff on the topic of Money Laundering.
The goal of the partnership was to raise awareness of red flags for potential use of FanDuel as a method of Money Laundering. The team leveraged the enthusiasm the FanDuel staff had for the ‘training universe’ established from years of collaboration between FanDuel and Labyrinth Training, featured well-known existing characters as well as introducing new characters specific to the series. With scenes set in both the FanDuel offices and inside their retail locations, Labyrinth Training designed custom backgrounds based on real-life images to give FanDuel employees the unique experience of seeing their place of work realized via animation. The result was an extremely well-received and quickly completed experience for all FanDuel employees, further cementing the relationship they have with the characters and methods used in the overall training universe.
FanDuel employees in the US, Canada, and UK were introduced to Emil, a VIP client services member working at one of their retail locations. Along with trusted VIP manager Jackie (a regular in the series,) Emil navigates the complicated intricacies of his relationship with Sebastian, a famous entrepreneur and frequent guest at the sportsbook.
“It’s been my experience that the feedback you often get on training is ‘why do we have to do this?’, but with our AML training I get actual feedback about the substance and questions about who the characters are based on or what office we used for the look and feel.
This tells me people are paying attention.”
— Jonathon Fishner, Senior Director of Financial Crimes Compliance at Fan Duel
Goals & Objectives
FanDuel and Labyrinth Training collaborated to set goals for the experience with a focus on engaging and entertaining the staff while educating them on key topics:
Create an engaging program that is relatable for all FanDuel employees, covering both office and retail-centric scenarios.
Conceive of a memorable, yet typical-for-FanDuel-employees scenario surrounding a well-known client and their circle of associates.
Lean into their diverse set of existing characters from previous trainings while establishing new characters for future episodes.
Work with FanDuel’s Subject Matter Experts to instill core learnings into the experience making it as informative and educational as it was engaging and entertaining.
Deliver a creative product in line with the first-rate design production values that FanDuel is known for.
Results
Successfully launched the program across 24 offices, in 3 countries with a 99% completion rate to the 3600 people to whom it was assigned.
Received overwhelmingly positive response from FanDuel employees, says Fishner: “I have people singing “Don’t Do It” (a theme song from the training) to me in the halls!”
Established a new character in Emil to represent the experience of those at retail locations for all future episodes, as well as memorable ‘villains’ such as Sebastian the entrepreneur and his girlfriend/colluding partner Rachel. Says Fishner: “Because of the quality of our AML trainings with Labyrinth Training over the last few years, other FanDuel teams have also used Labyrinth Training, resulting in an MCU-style universe across our AML, Anti-bribery and Corruption and Privacy trainings.”
Educated FanDuel employees to the nuances of Money Laundering schemes and the importance of speaking up regardless of how difficult it may seem.
Designed and brought to life new real-life environments in an animated setting, adding authenticity to the experience as well as showcasing retail locations in a way not previously seen.
